Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Community Infrastructure in the County of Barrhead
February 15, 2013
BARRHEAD, AB – Today, the Honourable Rob Merrifield, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for two community centres in the County of Barrhead under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Your Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities across Canada,” said MP Merrifield. “By making investments in local infrastructure like the Glenreagh and Summerdale community centres we are helping boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians.”
The Harper Government’s investment of $10,674 will go towards upgrades to the Glenreagh Community Centre’s kitchen and bathrooms, which will modernize the facility and extend the life-span of the building.
“The Glenreagh Community Centre is pleased to receive support from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund,” said Larry Kublik, President of the Glenreagh Community Centre. “Through CIIF funding we will be able to upgrade our Community Centre, in order to better serve the Barrhead Area.”
The Harper Government is also investing $8,280 towards renovations to the Summerdale Community Centre. Interior upgrades will provide enhanced accessibility and functionality within the Centre, thereby increasing the number of visitors who can utilize the facility.
“The current Summerdale Community Centre was completed in 1974 and CIIF funding has allowed us to make much-needed upgrades to our restrooms and stage,” said Dale Greig, Treasurer of the Summerdale Community Centre. “All of the work has been done by local contractors and volunteer labour. These improvements increase accessibility and have already received compliments from people who use the hall.”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
